hope to see you around :) November 14 Movie MasalaIt is not everyday that I watch new films just as they hit the marquee. But last week I was exhilarated enough to indulge in some movie watching. These were the most talked about Hindi films – Om Shanti Om and Saawariyan. Since there is no multiplex in our town so we have to do with watching films in the theatre. I must confess it is an enjoyable experience as each star entry, gesture, dialogue, song in the film is greeted with loud claps, shouts, whistles from the young crowd. Moreover, it is not everyday when you encounter a fist-fight among rival young gangs who make the theatre their battlefield.
Om Shanti Om is a mughlai masala Bollywood film, with dose of reincarnation, comedy, drama, music and what not. Khan impresses with the seriousness he takes the mainstream cinema, his fitness, not forgetting the six-abs pack, which is an inspiration for all the overweight strugglers, who wage a daily battle against the fat stored in ample in their bodies. The girl makes an impressive debut and she is a complete charmer and totally at ease in her roles. My verdict is that it is a highly watchable film, upbeat, energetic and meant for all kinds of viewers, even the discerning kind like me, who vouch for parallel cinema. Moreover, it is nice to make a retro journey and visit the fashion sensibilities of 70’s. The high point of my movie experience was the enthusiasm of young crowds, which surely kept the sparks flying in the pitch-dark theatre.
On the other hand, Saawariyan is an aesthetically exquisite classic film with its blue-black night theme, meant for the genteel people. The sets are profoundly surreal as if straight out of fantasy books, the star children are beautiful and talented, emotions are beautiful blue, music soulful, yet this overdose of beauty is not enough to grip the viewer. Too much beauty is not easy to digest, because it becomes monotonous, and it does not give a realistic sense, rather appears fictional, rooted away from reality. The film is like a beautiful piece of poetry, but somewhere the poem loses its soul without touching the core of the readers.
With regard to my previous entry "Stranded", which I also believe was quite unlike me, as it bordered on melancholy, loss and lovelessness; fortunately it was not me, rather a vision that came fleeting to me and which passed in that fleeting moment just after the words were written. My own life is an amazing overdose of love, laughter, shared joys, contentment; where tears and hassles are rare and cherished visitors. How monotonously and beautifully boring like Saawariyan!! But this love surely touches my soul each day of my existence, unlike the film!! Sometimes I feel I have to manufacture pain in order to write a poem, since no masterpiece ever came out of a happy heart except a happy life! *grin* Touche! May it always remain like like this - boringly happy! Amen |
